Poppyjem Jewellery & Craft Studio

The story of Poppyjem Jewellery and Craft Studio began in 1861, when my great, great grandmother was presented with a writing bureau. Her husband was a vicar in a village in Nottinghamshire and when he retired the parishioners gave her the bureau as a gift to thank her for all her work within the parish. I have the letter still that was given to her, with over 200 signatures thanking her.

It was passed down the family to my grandmother who used it as a Jewellery case, and as a child i would spend many hours asking her about each of her little treasures that she kept. there. Precious jewels, family pieces, costume jewellery ranging from the late 1800's to the 1970's.

The bureau is now mine and is my most treasured possession. It was one of my fondest memories as a child, and this is where my love of jewellery began.

My other passion is in the beauty of colours. I love the richness, combinations, shades, merging of colour, particularly in animals and plants. Marine life is incredible with so many beautifully coloured creatures, quite breathtaking. Birds are like little colour palettes with wings  The combination of colours in flowers also fascinate me, how one flower can have so many shades of colour amazes me!

Colour is my inspiration in the pieces i create, mainly the combination of colour. Which is why my work is so varied, they are my interpretation of colours that i like to see together, ranging from ceramic and lampwork glass beads to wood, leather and metals. Sometimes my pieces need to be bold and rich, equally simple and subtle, and it usually stems from the colour of one bead that i have found.

I hope you enjoy my work as much as i enjoy creating it. I keep Poppyjem's facebook page undated regularly with the new pieces that i create, before they are available in the Poppyjem Etsy shop, so hopefully you will join me there

FEATURED PAGE - SOCKAMAJIGS - 7.2.15

SOCKAMAJIGS

Let me first introduce myself: I'm Kerry Hoare, an American living in London since 2001. Sockamajigs was "born" over two years ago and since then I have sewn and created these little sock animals nearly every day. Although by profession I am a Child and Family Therapist, I now enthusiastically call myself a toymaker. I also work as a background/supporting artiste for films and television.

My first sock monkey, an original Rockford Redheel design, was handmade by my grandmother. It soon became, and remained, my most precious possession throughout my childhood and into my teens. When I was about thirteen, I found my grandmother's sock monkey pattern and started making sock monkeys for ill children in the local hospital. Some 40+ years later I started making sock monkeys once again for family and friends, even though I hadn't sewn on a sewing machine since my teens.

Sockamajigs has grown into a very busy small business and my unique creations are in great demand. I sell only from my Facebook page and I have a loyal group of followers. I enjoy the personal communication between myself and the customer; FB is a great platform for being able to offer a bespoke service.

Until very recently I worked from our 45-foot narrowboat. Working from a boat is challenging, not only with limited space, but also the domestic batteries always needing to be fully charged to run my sewing machine and have bright lights. Now having a little workspace in our flat feels like such luxury. I'm hoping to double my productivity.

I make Large Sockamajigs that are similar to the original sock monkey pattern and Little Sockamajigs which I have designed. My creations often wear clothes made of just socks too, and the "hoodie" has been a popular addition. I don't sketch out new designs for the animals or clothes, but rather I make up the patterns in my head. Over the past few years I've made Zombie Monkeys, Punky Munkeys, giraffes, elephants, bears, cats and most recently dogs of every imaginable breed. I hand-embroider name badges and love using buttons for eyes or decoration. My favourite part is "sculpting" their little facial features to make them come alive.

Sockamajigs are marked with the CE logo, and meet the European Union Soft Toy Safety Regulations 2011.

As I complete each Sockamajig, it brings a smile to my face. I hope I can share that joy with you.

Visit my fb page by clicking the logo above

My name is nici clark, I started crafting many years ago as a hobby, always playing with ideas for cards and plaques to give to relatives .

Around 2 years ago I started thinking of taking it more seriously, and creating different types items, not just cards and plaques but it wasn't until last year I gained the courage to start a Facebook page.

Now I have a page called moon pie designs and I make lots, for example free standing letters, fairy doors and tooth fairy items to name a few, and my page is slowly taking shape !

My hopes for my crafting future are to expand and just keep doing what I love !
